The melody of one of two hymns will rise to a quiet murmur in my subconscious those mornings when I open my eyes to a sky glowing apricot, sometimes pink, above the shutters in our bedroom window. On the wall a wavy window-shaped patch of light glimmers golden where the sun streams through the old glass of our Craftsman Bungalow windows. In my mind’s eye I can see the shining ribbons of light that are surely lining the edges of the clouds. It’s either Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies, or When Morning Gilds the Skies. This morning it was the former.
Christ whose glory fills the skies,
Christ the true, the only light,
Sun of righteousness, arise,
Triumph o’er the shades of night!
Day-spring from on high, be near!
Day-star, in my heart appear!
Dark and cheerless is the morn
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day’s return,
Till thy mercy’s beams I see;
Till they inward light impart,
Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine,
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief!
Fill me, radiancy divine,
Scatter all my unbelief!
More and more thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.
Charles Wesley
Here are a few shimmering arrangements of this light-filled hymn glorifying the Radiant One:
As always, thank you for stopping by!
Love that song!
